After returning home from Balgo, I spent about 10 years flying backwards and forwards to the Kimberley and then Perth and later to Fitzroy Crossing. I continued pressing for an investigation into Child Abuse that I had reported in Broome, to the police and the Catholic Social justice and Education systems . The Police and the Media in WA were as bad a s the Catholic system let alonee the regulatory bodies who came and went to “shore -up” yet another community who had virtually runaground because of rorts and fraud from imported white administators.
I was ignored, threatened, laughed at and put out of work. The Bishop of Broome was very recently reinvestigated and finally, after three investigations and 20 years on charges have been made and The Bishop is facing court.
Despite the threats to my life and the continued harassment, I did produce a report that went to the Victorian Parliamentary Enquiry which became the forerunner to a private reporting in Melbourne at the Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Sexual Abuse.
I later had an officer from the newly set up SOCCO unit in Warrnambool screaming down the phone at me that this reporting had never happened, telling me that there was something wrong with my head. The Socco unit was the direct response from the Royal commission to prevent further harm befalling kids lured into traps and so I was not impressed by this response at all….. same old… I did put in a complaint and he now works in another area but is still very much part of the Force.! Why do th Police Force continue to employ people like this who make things worse. In the Territory and parts of the West there is clear rascism operating.
I completed a Masters in Creative Enterprise based on my studio, “Inspired Space” in Warrandyte during this along with a couple of Cert 1V’s in Small Business Management because I saw them as vaaluable contributions for work in those places of smaller local artist run spaces without the Big Art end of Town controlling the most of the creative outflow from the many communities in the Top End.

Photo taken by Helen Arundell, for Camperdown Chronicle. July 2003. Books being created by locals for their children at the school and beyond. Mangabala books have helped to create so many local stories into great books and Kimberley Literacy as well as Balgo artists working with Wirremanu School have been very successful in producing beautiful books especially for their own kids in schools . It has become widespread now, thankfully but in 2002-3 really fledgeling. Bi-Literacy programs such as the one run at Mt Leibig N.T. are very successful
